This deposit of natural slate was discovered in the late 1700's. The rich dark blue black tone and hard density made it an ideal roofing product. In the 1800's as the roofing material was quarried, it was put on bateaus and poled up the James River to Lynchburg Virginia where it would then be moved by rail.
Today the same excellent roofing material is produced in limited quantities.
