Hip and Ridge /Starter Calculations for Roofing Slate
Calculating the amount of hip and ridge slates you will need can be accomplished with these simple yet very helpful calculations. Please print out this worksheet for assistance.
Hip and Ridge- These tiles are the same size as the other roofing tiles or for a random the narrowest width tile.
a. Take the linear feet and multiply by 2 (2 sides to a ridge) and then by 12 (inches)= y
b. Take y and divide by exposure of each slate tile= z (this will provide you with the number of pieces needed)
c. Take z and divide by the number of pieces in the square of the size you are using achieving the number of squares of Hip and Ridge slates you will need.
Linear Ridge in Feet______________________x 2 x 12 = _________________(y)
Y ____________________/ (exposure) _________________=______________(z)
Z ____________________/ (# of pieces)_________________=________________
Starters- Starters are the same size roofing tile turned sideways.
a. Total linear footage times 12”= x
b. Divide x by the length (not the width) of the slate being used = y (the number of pieces you will need)
c. Divide y by the number of pieces per square = the number of squares needed.
Total linear footage______________ x 12” =_________________(x)
X ______________________ / (width) __________________=_______________(y)
Y __________________/ (# of pieces per sq.)_________________= ____________
