- The Processing of Natural Slate -
Slate deposits are few and far between, they form when organic material in compressed with heat, pressure and time to form this metaphoric rock. The locations of these deposits are scattered throughout and world and may vary depending on their chemical composition.
The rock is then processed, and no matter where this is done the process is the same. The stone is taken out of the ground in large slabs of raw stone they are then sawn down to a specific size know as a block. With a hammer and chisel the block is split into chips or a tile with natural clefting on both sides. The edges of the roofing slate are trimmed to create a chamfered or beveled edge and then holes are punched in the slate. The slate is then palletized and shipped out.
